How to Convert an Excel File to a CSV File

In this video, I demonstrate how to convert an Excel file into a CSV file.  This method will retain the original file and create an additional file with the data saved in CSV format. The method for doing this slightly differs between versions of Excel.

Excel 365/2019/2016 Method
  1. Open the Excel file that you want to convert
  2. Click the File tab on Excel’s Ribbon
  3. Change the file type from Excel Workbook (*.xlsx) to CSV (Comma delimited) (*.csv)
  4. Click on Save. Excel will create a separate CSV file.

Earlier Versions of Excel
  1. Open the Excel file that you want to convert
  2. Click the File tab on Excel’s Ribbon
  3. Click Save As
  4. In the Save As dialog box change file type in the Save as type menu from Excel Workbook (*.xlsx) to CSV (Comma delimited) (*.csv)
  5. Click on Save.
  6. In the compatibility warning box, click Yes.
  7. Excel will create a separate CSV file.
